"Electromagnetic fields are an emerging public health crisis that will go down in history as one of the most important mistakes made in the name of progress.”

-Camilla Rees, MBA

I've compiled a few more notes for you from the recent EMF conference in California, and there is still more to come!

On the morning of Saturday, September 6th, we kicked it off with Dr Lisa Nagy who discussed Differential Diagnosis: Lyme, Mold and EMF Sensitivity. This woman is a shero in environmental medicine (and in case you don’t know what a shero is, it’s a female hero). Nothing makes a better healer than someone who has suffered, gotten well and is striving to help others. You can hear her story in a Netflix docuseries titled Afflicted (Glenn and I are on episode 4. It’s very engaging, educational and of course, disturbing).

Dr Nagy starts her lecture by sharing a video of a patient whose first environmental assault was carbon monoxide poisoning at 2 years of age. Later, exposure to a moldy building tipped the scales into electrohypersensitivity. This guy can hear radio transmissions in his head – clearly – and he is struggling to survive. Her message: believe your patients.

She offered more wisdom...

Once the patient has become environmentally ill from chemical or mold exposure it is imperative to avoid EMF so as to avoid becoming EMF sensitive. Must ask questions about symptoms of EMF and give advice the first appointment.

This means not using the cell near the head and employing an air tubing headset all the time – never removing it from the phone. Speaker phone still keeps the device too close to the skull, Bluetooth is not benign. Do NOT sleep with the phone.

Avoiding smart meter installation is a must as well.

Using a computer with a distance from the battery by using the external keyboard, track ball mouse not the mousepad on the laptop as the electricity can go through the battery to the index finger and create nerve damage demonstrable on EMG.

Mac mini has low EMF.”

“There are a triad of conditions commonly seen in environmentally ill patients:

  1. Adrenal insufficiency

  2. Dysautonomia (when the autonomic nervous system is not working properly)

  3. Mitochondrial damage – myopathy”

Random factoids from her presentation:

- In her experience, lavender and tea tree oil can trigger disease in children. If you are environmentally sensitive, no matter how lovely you think essential oils are, avoid them for a decade until you are well enough to handle them. They are not benign natural products.

-If you are hot in the afternoon and cold in grocery stores, that is a sign of low cortisol.

-In kids, moldy buildings with WiFi cause adrenal insufficiency, dysautonomia, and chemical sensitivity which later in life adds up to drug addiction. Mold damages adrenals – badly.

-A dysautonomic crisis looks like a panic attack.

-Long eyelashes in kids points to food sensitivities.

-Mold makes men belligerent and women sensitive; relationships are stressed and usually end.

-She said homeless people in the ER need oxygen not psychiatric drugs. Many of them are NOT mentally ill; they are physically ill from the environment.

-Doctors think the problem is in the patient, but it’s in the environment!

-Metals in the body have an antenna effect – fillings in teeth, eyeglasses, etc increase the total body burden and create allergies.

-For these people, nothing will appear on a physical exam; these are functional issues.

-Getting families to turn off Wi-Fi for 12 hours at night gets a foot in the door. Usually, dads won’t object to this.

-Kids who are hyperactive, destructive and make poor eye contact may be suffering from electro sensitivities.

-90% of the problem is IN YOUR HOME. Clean it up.

She recommends that patients buy this book: Living with Environmental Illness. I just ordered it.

3 cheers for Dr Lisa Nagy! What an amazing human being.

Next up was Magda Havas – another gem. She emphasized that oxidative stress explains all the effects of EMFs. X-rays, chemical pollutants, smoking and chlorinated water all have one thing in common: they are oxidizing agents. And that non-ionizing radiation (non-thermal effects) prevents repair of tissues in the body. That’s why we need plenty of CoQ10, Vitamin C, E, B12, melatonin, SOD (superoxide dismutase), manganese, selenium and zinc. In other words, you need to be nutritionally sound to cope with this onslaught of invisible bullshit.

Precursors to electrohypersensitivity include:

-Physical trauma to the nervous system.

-Chemical exposure.

-Electrical exposure.

-Biological trauma.

-Impaired immune system.

Dr Zory Glaser from the Naval Medical Research Instituted donated all of his documents to Dr Havas which you can access here. Impressive.

She was also a part of this group seeking to evaluate the level of radiation exposure in schools. It’s called the BRAG Antenna Ranking of Schools.

According to her, our most certain future looks like this: anxiety prone children will be taking care of their neurologically impaired parents.

So many people doing such wonderful, gut wrenching work, yes? I just love them. Thank you.

Alrighty, ya’ll, that’s all I have time for today. I’m heading to an herbal conference in California this weekend and need to prepare.

In the meantime, put that cell phone in airplane mode in peace, my friends!

Love,

Charlotte

PS – Unrelated to the never ending story of EMF health hazards, I discovered two great new snacks from Perfect Keto: chocolate covered macadamia nuts and a cinnamon roll bar. Absolutely delicious and most importantly, satisfying, especially when traveling.

I’m still reading The Invisible Rainbow and it is blowing my mind, but another book just arrived today that I'm looking forward to reading by Dr Tom Cowan – Cancer and The New Biology of Water: Why the War on Cancer Has Failed and What That Means for More Effective Prevention and Treatment.

Just a reminder that on Saturday, October 19th, Glenn and I will be teaching an 8-hour CEU seminar in Austin. You can learn more about it here (just scroll down on the page)! Really hoping to see some of you, as we talk about all the things holding us back from healing. See ya next week!

But first a funny story…

Last week after I sent out my newsletter saying that I was getting rid of my cell phone, I got my son Drake and we drove into Longmont to run some errands and go to the Sprint store. I could see that a storm was coming but as I pulled into the parking space in front of Sprint, there was zero precipitation and the sun was still out.

So I get out of my car and step up on the curb. There was a guy coming out of the store and a woman walking down the corridor on my left and all of a sudden a piece of ice hit my head and grazed my face. There was water on my arm and even my phone! I screamed. It scared me. The guy coming out of the store joked, “I think that lady threw a piece of ice at you.” She replied, “Not me!” Drake says, “Look mommy, it’s a piece of hail.”

Seriously, what are the chances? I figure The Universe was saying one of two things to me, “Hey, dumbass, getting rid of your cell phone is stupid!” Or two, “You go girl! Well done!” I prefer to believe the latter.

Following this little incident, I walked into the store and said to the Sprint person, “I hope you can help me. Have you ever heard of electrohypersensitivity?”

Shaking his head, he said, “No, ma’am. What is it?”

“Well, when I talk on this phone, I feel it in my body. I came in about 2 months ago and traded in my iPhone for this flip phone thinking that it would be better, but it’s not. I get this rising sensation in my body, like I’m going to explode. It’s very uncomfortable, and I’m not alone. I just attended a medical conference about EMFs. This is something you will hear more about. I don’t even like being in this store right now because I don’t always feel the sensations immediately, it often comes on later. So I’m done. I want to cancel my contract, if I have one, and see if you can give me anything for this new phone. I don’t want it.”

I was met with a blank stare.

So I smiled and said, “I bet you don’t have this conversation everyday!”

He said, “Nope.”

We walked over to the counter for him to look up my account, and at every pause in the conversation, he kept asking me more questions about my experience. He seemed genuinely interested because I think we all KNOW that these EMFs are affecting us despite our continued use and love of these devices.

Long story short, I left the store with my phone because it has no value and with the reality that he couldn’t cancel my account so I had to call Sprint when I got home - at which point I had the same conversation that I did at the Sprint store.

The good news: I survived a piece of random hail hitting my head, 2 people at Sprint have now heard of electrohypertensivity, and my cell phone was disconnected Sunday.

Yippee!

Ok, now back to the EMF conference…

First up after lunch on Friday, September 6thwas Dominique Belpomme, MD: Signs, Symptoms, Diagnostic Testing and Treatment of Electrohypersensitivity/Multiple Chemical Sensitivity in Adults and Children

This doc is in the game – what a Frenchman. He’s authored a number of studies looking at the presentation of those with electrohypersensitivity and multiple chemical sensitivities. He considers that histamine is the BIG marker associated with these conditions:

“In the healthy brain the bulk concentration of histamine is very low. Upon brain injury, degeneration, or infection, the inflammatory response may trigger degranulation of mast cells, leading to a massive release of histamine in the blood and the cerebrospinal fluid, leading to an increase of blood brain barrier permeability through oxidative stress.”

The way I see it: electromagnetic radiation is an environmental toxin that contributes to a leaky brain and a leaky gut, assaulting the stability of all our cell membranes. I hope you enjoy your wireless keyboard and mouse and speakers and vaccuums because your body fucking isn’t!!!

In addition to high histamine levels, we also see low melatonin and we don’t know if it’s being used up or not produced.

Oh, and how about a nice dose of autoimmune disease: “Our hypothesis is that under the influence of electric and/or electromagnetic fields and/or chemicals, oxidation of cerebral proteins may progress to autoimmunoreactivity leading to the occurrence of autoantibodies against myelin.”

In summary, he discussed what happened at the 5thParis Appeal Congress on May 18th, 2015 in Brussels:

“Some 180 doctors, scientists, jurists, elected representatives, journalists and other participants coming from many countries attended this Congress, probably the most important scientific event ever organized on this topic. Most of the speakers underlined the fact that since the 1960s, several thousand studies (1,800 between 2007 and 2012 according to the Bioinitiative report) have shown the harmfulness of extended low exposures to electromagnetic fields; however, industries and governments still deny the existence of this risk, which jeopardizes the health of most living beings today, at various degrees and mostly without their knowledge.”

Ugh. Many thanks to the captured agencies running our government.

Jeromy Johnson and Rob Metzinger: The Engineering Approach to Healing and Preventing Electrical Sensitivity

To me, the most interesting part of his presentation was about why personal protection products are NOT a good idea. He made 4 points:

  1. “At best products provide a placebo.” In other words, he’s tested a number of these products and they just don’t work that well or at all.

  2. “At worst they keep people from making important lifestyle changes.” In other words, it’s like taking nutritional supplements and eating at McDonald’s. Lifestyle has to change!

  3. “Part of the denial (bargaining) within our society.” In other words, we want all of the conveniences of wireless technology without the dark side, but that is simply wishful thinking.

  4. “What if we had taken the same approach with secondhand smoke or vehicle emissions?” Good question. We’d be even more screwed!

The take home message is that surrounding yourself in crystals and pyramids and putting useless, expensive stickers on the back of your phone isn’t going to work. The upside is that when you change how you use technology, you save yourself from the addiction! Amen to that.

His tips for reducing electrical sensitivity:

  1. Live in a low EMF home (critical step)

  2. Have a low EMF sleeping area (critical step)

  3. Minimal use of wireless technology

  4. Create a low EMF computing setup/office

  5. Personalized detox and exercise protocols

  6. Quality nutrition and supplementation practices

  7. Low stress lifestyle (meditation, supportive relationships, positive outlook and possibly some limbic system retraining)

  8. Use knowledge gained to help our communities understand this important issue.

A building biologist can help you with the first four tips.

Then, Rob Metzinger, who is one of the founders of Safe Living Technologies, took the stage to share a bit about his company. This is the meter that we have been using in our home and around town to check out places. It is affordable and very handy. People really seem to respond to this issue when they can see and hear the invisible waves. It may be uncomfortable but reality trumps discomfort every time.

Erica Mallery-Blythe: Diagnosis, Treatment and Reversal of Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity

So this woman founded a group called Phire: Physicians’ Health Initiative for Radiation and Environment – another treasure trove of information.

She reminds us that electrohypersensitivity is a clinical diagnosis, meaning that there is no test to determine if you have it; it is a constellation of symptoms and the diagnosis comes with knowing the patient’s history with a thorough examination, and that it is a physical phenomenon NOT a psychological one.

Imagine that: environmental illness isn’t in your head.

Turn off your WiFi router and cell phone at night in peace, my friends!

Love,

Charlotte

PS – I absolutely love hearing from ya’ll and the changes you are making. I even received a handwritten letter in the mail from a friend the other day. What a treat! To all who have reached out (and to those who will reach out), thank you for sharing a bit of your world with me and for reading my blog. It means so much.

On another note, I cannot put this book down: The Invisible Rainbow: A History of Electricity and Life by Arthur Firstenberg. It is beyond fascinating. As it turns out, electricity was thrust upon the world just like wireless technologies. Back in the day, there were plenty of scientists waving their hands in the air saying, “Wait! Stop! This is going to make us sick!” Despite the obvious harm even electricity was causing, people were so enamored with the latest and greatest technologies that it kept getting rolled out. Just like 5G technology and all this other bullshit is today.

This book presents the history of electricity that isn’t in the history books. Even fucking influenza is related to electricity! The sad truth is that none of us will ever know what real vitality feels like because we are so incredibly weakened by our electrified environment. Just today an electrician came to install a remote switch on our breaker box to shut off everything in the house but the refrigerators at night to improve our sleep. The first time someone recommended this to me, I thought, “That is fucking ridiculous.” Clearly, I’ve changed my mind because I will never look at flipping a switch to turn on a lightbulb the same way again. Please check out this book. It is enlightening and worth every penny.

And this weekend you can find me bathing in the electromagnetic fields of a hotel in Denver at Back to School for Doctors. I know, I just can’t stop learning. If you're coming, please let me know.

See ya next week!

"Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”

-Maya Angelou

My husband and I just returned from the first EMF Conference for medical professionals in the United States, and the take home message is clear: we need to change how we use technology and we need to change NOW.

To give you a taste of our weekend, you should know that when we arrived at the conference, the entire audience was told to put their phones in airplane mode. The conference facility turned off Wi-Fi as well - both in the conference room AND where we slept. There was also a designated lap top free zone for seats to accommodate people who are sensitive to magnetic fields, and if you did use a laptop, then you were instructed to disable both WiFi and Bluetooth. Once you learn about these issues, you realize that this is the least you can do.

Have you ever been to an event that took these steps? I haven’t. But this is exactly the kind of thing that should be happening at all gatherings to bring attention to the reality that wireless technology is hurting us – whether you can feel it or not. These conversations are going to be awkward as all hell, but absolutely 100% necessary.

Before I dive into the highlights of the conference, I need to say something more. Please don’t shake your head in despair and stop reading this email. For whatever reason – overwhelm, feelings of helplessness, despair, addiction, the fear that we’ve injured our children, etc – I’ve never encountered a topic that brings up more for people and in response, they just check out. I get it. It’s a lot to acknowledge – just please stay with me. Keep reading. This is so important because 90% of the negative impact is in your home. 90%. Yes, there are cell towers, power lines, neighbors and workplaces who do things you cannot control, but 90% of it, you CAN address. We certainly have addressed it in our home, and I feel so much better. Ok – now that you’re with me, let’s go!

Sharon Golderg, MD – EMF Exposure: Neurological & Cardiometabolic Effects

Dr Goldberg resides in Santa Fe. My understanding is that she doesn’t have a physical office. She comes to your home and is studying to be a Building Biologist (this is the professional organization that trains people to evaluate spaces for the impact of radio frequencies, magnetic fields, etc).

Dr Goldberg is an incredible human being and explained very clearly that EMF biological effects overlap with chronic disease mechanisms. Said another way, all the inflammation in your body associated with chronic disease is synergizing with your use of wireless technology. What are the biological effects of electromagnetic fields? Let me break it down for you:

Oxidative stress

Mitochondrial damage

Membrane leakage

Calcium channel effects

Heat shock proteins

DNA Damage

She emphasized that people are sick and not getting better and EMFs are responsible. The remediation targets are as follows: microwave radiation (RFR), dirty electricity (VLF), AC magnetic fields (ELF) and AC Electric Fields (ALF). Within each one of these categories, there are things we can control, and things we can’t, but a building biologist can help you take a look.

She cited this study that looks at how those born between 1981-1996 are doing with their health. These are the millennials. Major health decline begins at age 27. The 3 conditions increasing the most are: major depression, hyper-activity and type II diabetes which are all associated with oxidative stress as it relates to or is magnified by EMF exposure.

From 1999-2016, there has also been a significant increase in suicide rates. She referred to this study to illustrate the connection: Microwave frequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) produce widespread neuropsychiatric effects including depression by affecting what are called voltage gated calcium channels (VGCCs). These VGCCs have a “near universal role in release of neurotransmitters and hormones by neuroendocrine cells. EMFs act via downstream VGCC activation effects: increase intracellular calcium, excessive calcium and nitric oxide signaling, excessive peroxynitrite, free radicals and oxidative stress.”

Strokes among young people are also on the rise. Just check out this new magazine called Stroke Smart. The rates of strokes among older people have not changed. The shared mechanism between mental illness, stroke and dementia is, you guessed it, oxidative stress. This review article confirms that 93 out of 100 studies shows that RFR induces oxidative stress in biological systems with a high pathogenic potential.

She goes on to talk about how “the pancreas has poor defenses against oxidative stress” and how “Wi-Fi leads to hyperglycemia, increased oxidative stress and impaired insulin secretion in rats.” And what is the medical system doing to “monitor/treat” diabetes? Using a continuous glucose monitor which checks up to 288 glucose readings per day, sent wirelessly to your smart device! Brilliant. Ok, that’s enough from Dr Goldberg...

Just recognize this: anyone who says we need more science to prove that this technology is affecting our health isn’t actually looking at the science. We have all the science we need to exercise the precautionary principle, yet people still hold their cell phones to their heads, give devices to their children and new technologies just keep rolling out.

Olle Johansson, PhD – “Treatment” of Electrohypersensitivity: Lessons from Sweden

I could have listened to this man talk all day long. I even cried. His presence was moving and healing. The basic tenet of his presentation was this: this morning you woke up as an electrosenstive person, so there’s nowhere to go without you feeling it in your body. In this sensitive state, do you want to be seen as a patient or a person? What if the canary in the coal mine is the only normal human being? Yep, that’s what brought a tear to my eye.

The bottom line is that humans aren’t impaired, their environment is. Treat the environment, not the person and an electrohypersensitive person moves from being a patient to a citizen. In Sweden, Dr Johansson has played a large role in defining electrohypersensitivity (EHS) as a disability; therefore, the health of living and work places has to be considered for these people. Here’s the abstract to his article.

God bless this man and his work. Thank you.

Dr Pilar Munoz-Calero from Madrid – Understanding EHS and Patient Cases

There was a bit of a language barrier here for me, but this woman was solid. Here are some tidbits…There are 25 different reviews showing reduced fertility including:

Structural changes in testicles and ovaries

Low sperm count, motility and quality

Diminished number of follicles (ovarian)

Increase in miscarriages

Diminished levels of all 3 sexual hormones

Diminished libido

She also explained 4 reasons that EMFs are much more active in children than adults:

1. Children have surface relationships with higher volumes, which means that their tissue is much more exposed to EMFs. This can be particularly important in the head, where the thinner cranium means that the brain exposures are much higher.

2. Children have very high densities of mother cells that are particularly sensitive to EMFs (previously discussed by Dr. Igor Belyaev).

3. The developing brain seems to be especially sensitive to EMFs.

4. Young tissue has a much greater content of water outside the cells than older tissue. This leads to a much deeper penetration of effects.

For these reasons, WiFi and radiation from cell phone towers are especially worrisome in schools. We've got to get this shit away from our children.

Also, from Dr Pilar, the more intelligent the device, the more it pulsates; the more it pulsates the more biologically active it is. She also quoted The Klinghardt Institute, “Electromagnetic fields suppress the immune system and provoke the growth of Borrelia and Epstein Barr pathogenicity. A 7 minute cell phone call activates your hidden Epstein Barr Virus.”

Dr Devra Davis – Practical Applications and Medical Organization Recommendations: The Effects of RF and Electromagnetic Exposure on Infertility, Brain Development and Other Chronic Health Problems

Dr Davis reminds us that “it’s best to keep your cell phone as far from the testes as you can (Cleveland Clinic).”

She also shared a 3 minute video from the History Channel about The Active Denial System – watch this just in case you think invisible waves can’t do anything to us.

As it turns out, 5G is using some form of millimeter wave so it’s good to know that “sweat glands act as helical antennas that absorb millimeter frequencies. A moratorium on the deployment of 5G is warranted.” So yeah, scientists are waving their hands in the air yelling for help while we are all looking down at our goddmamn phones.

Dr Davis is also a part of the Babysafe Project which is a website everyone should go to!

And last but not least, I just watched her TedTalk titled Rapid Fire: What Brain and Sperm Share and Why Care. It is well worth your time.

Alrighty, that’s enough for now. Stay tuned for part 2 because this was just a brief summary of Friday morning before lunch.

Change your use of technology in peace, my friends!

Love,

Charlotte

PS – I want to celebrate something with you. I’m getting rid of my cell phone today. It has been a gradual awakening for me. First, there was this strong feeling that I needed to extract myself from social media. Done. Then, I realized my iPhone was a mental and physical health hazard (who needs a computer in their hand?), so I traded it in for an old school flip phone. But it affected my body, too, and now I look at this flip phone, and I don’t want it anywhere near me. Or you, for that matter. Because “second hand radiation” is the new “second hand smoke,” except that one could escape smoke, if needed. This radiation from devices is freaking everywhere, and I’m not going to contribute to it anymore. Today marks the beginning of my new life without a cell phone in my purse. It will be simpler in some ways and more complex in others, and I welcome all of it. Cheers to change!
